Solid Brass Deadbolts – Security and Style For the Home
A High Quality deadbolt is an essential component of any home security system. Many homeowners rely solely on a deadbolt to protect their home so choosing a high quality and durable deadbolt is important. Deadbolts are a locking mechanism that is installed separately from the doorknob and requires a key to unlock. Depending on where the deadbolt is being installed there are two main types to choose from: single or double cylinder.
A single cylinder deadbolt is unlocked using a key on one side and a thumb turn on the other side – this is most commonly used in homes. Multiple sets can be keyed the same so you can install deadbolts on front and back doors, garages and sheds and they can all be unlocked using a single key. This type of deadbolt is easy to unlock from the inside which is important if there is an emergency but can be vulnerable if a window is located near the door.
Double cylinder deadbolts require a key to unlock from either side – these are more common in businesses or warehouses. This provides added security but can make exiting a building more difficult and time consuming. Most deadbolts (single and double cylinder) are accompanied by a spring bolt lock on the doorknob itself. Spring bolt locks retract when force is applied to the knob.
Solid brass deadbolts are available in a variety of styles and finishes to complement your existing door hardware. The most popular finishes include Polished Brass, Polished Chrome, Satin Nickel, Oil Rubbed Bronze and Antique Brass. Create a common theme by using the same finish on all your exterior door hardware and further enhance the look by using a common pattern such as Georgian Roped or Eastlake. Although a deadbolt is necessary for security there is no reason it cannot be a beautiful addition to your front door and reflect your personality.
